“Export markets for Vietnam’s agricultural and forestry products in the face of requirements set by the EU for deforestation-free commodity production (EUDR) and the potential for carbon credit market development”
——————————————–
The seminar aims to update and share information on export market trends, including new requirements for deforestation-free commodity production, and discuss their implications for Vietnam’s agricultural and forestry sectors. The seminar also aims to update and share information on the operation of carbon markets, focusing on opportunities and challenges for Vietnam’s future forest carbon market. Focusing on two key issues—the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which will take effect in early 2026, and the potential of the forest carbon credit market in the context of Vietnam’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and striving to achieve net-zero by 2050—the seminar will discuss solutions for reorganizing supply chains to ensure traceability, policy mechanisms that need to change, the roles of participants in the chains, and forms of linkage among farming households, dealers, and processing companies to meet traceability requirements, maintain export markets, and sustainably develop these sectors in the future.
Speakers at the seminar:
+ Dr. Nguyen Trung Kien currently works at the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. Dr. Kien is the focal point for cooperation with the European Union (EU) in agriculture and serves as Secretary of the Joint Working Group established by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) to coordinate intersectoral activities to ensure compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) in Vietnam. Dr. Kien has actively participated in developing agricultural trade proposals, conducting policy dialogues and negotiations, and implementing bilateral cooperation programs with the EU and other international partners.
+ Dr. Nghiem Phuong Thuy, Specialist, Department of Forestry and Forest Protection, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. Dr. Thuy is the focal point for climate change and carbon in forestry. Dr. Thuy has participated in research, review, and policy development on climate change in forestry, while also advising on the development and negotiation of agreements on payments for, and the purchase and sale of, forest emission reductions. She is also advising on the development of policies, institutional frameworks, and technical conditions for forest carbon credits to participate in the domestic carbon market.
+ Dr. Truong Tat Do, a specialist in silviculture, currently works at the Department of Forestry and Forest Protection, Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. At the Department, Dr. Do is currently responsible for science, technology, and environmental matters in forestry. Dr. Do’s research focuses on silviculture, land degradation, combating climate change, REDD+, forest governance policies, and community forests. Dr. Do directly participates in numerous research studies, projects, and scientific research activities at various levels and leads the team implementing activities to adapt to the European Union’s regulation governing imports and exports of deforestation-free commodities and products. Dr. Do participates in the technical assistance project on Sustainable Deforestation-Free Landscape Management funded by the EU/UNDP.
+ Dr. To Xuan Phuc is a researcher at the Australian National University (ANU) and Managing Director of the Forest Policy, Finance, and Trade Program at Forest Trends (United States). Dr. Phuc’s research focuses on the legality and sustainability of the production of, trade in, and investment in agricultural and forestry commodities such as timber, coffee, and rubber, both within Vietnam and between Vietnam and countries in the Mekong Subregion. Dr. Phuc also researches forest carbon markets, focusing on carbon rights and mechanisms for sharing carbon-derived benefits.
Topics:
Specifically, the seminar will focus on the following main topics:
– Trends in export market requirements for deforestation-free commodities (EUDR) and issues facing Vietnam’s agricultural and forestry sectors.
– Vietnam’s policy adjustments for agricultural and forestry sectors in response to EUDR requirements.
– EUDR and export markets for Vietnam’s wood products.
– The carbon market in Vietnam: Potential and several challenges to address.
– Advantages and difficulties in developing the carbon market in Vietnam and implications for policy mechanisms.
Participants and partners:
The seminar will bring together approximately 60 delegates from central agencies, research institutes, and universities, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment and the Vietnam National University of Agriculture.
