Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Duc Tho, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chair of the University Council, speaks at the meeting
Speaking at the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Duc Tho, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chair of the University Council, recalled the period in the University’s history when it had to evacuate during the war to localities that are now Quang Trung and Nha Nam Communes (Bac Ninh Province) and Kha Son Commune (Thai Nguyen Province). Despite the hardships, the University’s lecturers and students always received protection and support from local authorities and residents. Their kindness helped the University sustain teaching and learning amid the bombing, writing a proud chapter in its history of “evacuation without interruption.”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Duc Tho affirmed that this commemorative program would not only provide an occasion to revisit heroic memories and the deep bonds between the University and local residents, but also offer current generations of faculty, staff, and students an opportunity to express their gratitude and carry forward and share the humanistic values embodied in the saying, “When drinking water, remember its source.” NEU hopes to work with these localities to continue nurturing their close ties and pursue new partnerships in education, culture, and community development as a beautiful symbol of knowledge, affection, and enduring bonds.
At the meeting, the parties agreed on a plan to jointly organize a series of meaningful activities to honor generations of leaders, residents, and exemplary families who supported the University during its evacuation. Leaders representing Quang Trung, Nha Nam, and Kha Son Communes also expressed their joy and emotion that NEU continues to remember and cherish its bonds with the localities that stood alongside the University throughout that chapter of its history. The localities pledged to coordinate closely and do everything possible to ensure the success of the commemorative program and spread its message of gratitude and intergenerational connection.

Representatives of the participating bodies’ leadership exchange views at the meeting
Under the plan, the 60th-anniversary program will feature a range of notable activities, including digitizing the commemorative volume “National Economics University — Memories of the Evacuation Years,” producing feature reports and interviews with historical witnesses, and stepping up communications activities in the localities. Sports exchanges will also be organized between the University’s faculty, staff, and employees and residents of the three evacuation-site communes to strengthen bonds and solidarity among the parties. These will be accompanied by a series of gatherings to honor leaders across generations and exemplary families, and the signing of memoranda of understanding on cooperation between NEU and the three localities. The commemorative series will conclude with an evening arts festival, “60 Years of Affection and Gratitude,” featuring joint performances by NEU faculty, staff, and students and the communes’ performing arts groups, recreating moving stories of kindness and affection from the evacuation years.
With the theme “60 Years of Affection and Gratitude,” the commemorative series will not only honor the people and places that stood alongside the University throughout its historical journey, but also carry forward fine traditions, gratitude, a humanistic spirit, and social responsibility—the values that have shaped NEU’s identity over nearly 70 years of establishment, growth, and development.
