Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong, President of NEU, delivers remarks

In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong, President of NEU, affirmed that the seminar held particular significance as the University approached its 70th anniversary and continued to reaffirm its pioneering mission in training a high-quality workforce to support the country’s development.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong noted that, despite its extensive experience and reputation in training the workforce for traditional economic fields, NEU still viewed itself as a “latecomer” in the digital economy—a relatively new but strategic field of study in the era of digital transformation.

President Bui Huy Nhuong emphasized that the digital economy is not merely a trend but an imperative as artificial intelligence (AI) and technology reshape models of growth, governance, and labor worldwide. Vietnam faces an urgent need for a workforce equipped with interdisciplinary knowledge, data-driven thinking, technological skills, and the capacity for innovation to adapt rapidly and lead this transformation.

NEU will adopt a systematic, substantive, and practice-oriented approach to training the digital economy workforce, aiming not only to impart knowledge but also to develop learners’ adaptability and creativity in the digital age. The University also seeks support, shared insights, and advice from experts, scholars, and businesses in Vietnam and abroad to progressively develop an academic program that meets the development needs of the digital economy, where technology and artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping economic models, governance, and labor markets.

“Training the digital economy workforce is not simply about introducing a new field of study; it is a strategic shift in the University’s development direction toward becoming an autonomous, internationally integrated research university capable of adapting to the rapid changes in the global digital economy,” emphasized Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong.

Dr. Dao Xuan Hoang, Director of the Digital Economy Program, Faculty of Digital Technology, Phenikaa University, presents “Employment Opportunities in Digital Economies Around the World”

Nguyen Van Thanh, Head of the Policy Division, Vietnam E-commerce and Digital Economy Agency, Ministry of Industry and Trade, contributes to the discussion at the seminar

At the seminar, participants discussed and conducted in-depth analyses of core issues in developing and implementing NEU’s academic program in Digital Economy. Many contributions focused on clarifying the conditions and development trends in the digital economy to determine whether the program should emphasize practical applications or in-depth research, while also considering infrastructure requirements and opportunities for cooperation with organizations and businesses in Vietnam and abroad.

Participants also focused on educational objectives and learning outcomes, emphasizing the need to establish a clear competency framework that would enable students, upon graduation, to attain levels of development ranging from understanding and analysis to creation, in line with international competency frameworks and the requirements of the digital economy.

Another key topic was identifying job roles and career opportunities for students after graduation. Experts argued that Digital Economy students need to develop competencies suited to a variety of jobs, from those in state management agencies and research organizations to positions in technology businesses and innovative startups.

In particular, the seminar devoted considerable time to discussing coordination mechanisms among the State, the University, and businesses, with a view to establishing a substantive model of tripartite cooperation. This linkage was seen as a foundation for providing students with a learning environment closely connected to practice and hands-on experience during their studies, preparing them to take on jobs immediately after graduation and thereby improving the quality of the country’s digital economy workforce.
