Exactly 69 years ago, on February 27, 1955, beloved President Ho Chi Minh wrote a letter to the Conference of Health Workers, offering valuable guidance. In the letter, he emphasized three points:

“- First and foremost, there must be genuine unity — Unity is our strength. Through unity, we can overcome every difficulty and achieve much.
Unity between longstanding and new staff. Unity among everyone in the health sector, from ministers, deputy ministers, doctors, and pharmacists to support workers. Although their work and positions may differ, everyone is an essential part of the health sector and of serving the people.

– Love your patients — Patients entrust their lives to you. The Government entrusts you with treating illnesses and safeguarding the health of our people. This is a very honorable duty. Therefore, health workers must love and care for patients as their own siblings and feel their pain as their own. ‘A good physician must be like a caring mother’ is a very true saying.

– Build a medical system of our own — During the years when our country was enslaved, medicine, like other sectors, was held back. Now that we are independent and free, health workers must help the people and the Government build a healthcare system suited to our people’s needs. Medicine must be based on the principles of being scientific, national, and serving the masses. Medicine must be based on the principles of being scientific, national, and serving the masses.

Our ancestors gained much valuable experience in treating illnesses with Vietnamese and Chinese traditional medicines. To broaden the scope of medicine, you should also focus on researching and combining ‘Eastern’ and ‘Western’ medicines.”

In recognition of the profound significance of this letter, on February 6, 1985, the Council of Ministers issued a Decision designating February 27 each year as Vietnamese Doctors’ Day to promote the responsibility, talent, and wisdom of health workers in building and defending the Fatherland.

On Vietnamese Doctors’ Day, February 27, NEU extends its thanks and best wishes to doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and everyone working in the health sector. May they always uphold their fine qualities and enjoy good health and wisdom as they contribute to the nation’s medical advancement.
