NEU Launches Donation Drive to Help Communities and NEU Students Recover from Typhoon No. 3

Responding to the appeal by General Secretary and State President To Lam and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, National Economics University (NEU) launched a donation drive on September 11, 2024, to help affected communities and NEU students recover from the damage caused by Typhoon No. 3 (Yagi).

Attending the launch were Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Chuong, President of NEU; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Duc Tho, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chair of the University Council; representatives of the leadership of socio-political organizations; representatives of the leadership of schools, faculties, institutes, departments and centers; and staff and employees of the University.

In recent days, people in many northern provinces have suffered severe damage caused by Typhoon No. 3, Yagi. They include the families of NEU students in the hardest-hit areas, such as Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Yen Bai, Tuyen Quang, Cao Bang, Lao Cai and Thai Nguyen, among others, who are facing flooding, landslides and damage to their homes and property.

In response, NEU launched a donation drive to help affected communities and NEU students recover from the damage caused by Typhoon No. 3 (Yagi) and its residual circulation.

Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Chuong, President of NEU, delivers remarks.

Expressing sympathy for the losses suffered by people in the northern provinces, Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Chuong, President of the University, called on NEU faculty, staff and employees at the launch to uphold the spirit of “mutual support and compassion” and “those who are better off helping those in need,” and to build on the tradition of great national unity. He urged them to act with compassion and responsibility, join hands to share the burden, and actively contribute donations to support affected communities and University students in recovering from storm and flood damage, quickly restoring production and stabilizing their lives…

On behalf of the University’s faculty and staff, the President extended his concern, encouragement and sympathy for the hardships and losses that people in affected localities, as well as the families and relatives of the University’s staff, employees, students and learners, have endured in recent days. He also expressed deep gratitude for the efforts of officers and soldiers on the front lines of disaster prevention, response and recovery, who have braved danger to assist people in distress.

Prof. Pham Hong Chuong also thanked units, staff and employees across the University for their consistent support and participation in efforts to assist education in remote areas facing difficulties and to provide assistance during natural disasters and epidemics. He also expressed his hope that the NEU community would continue working together to build a united institution and contribute to the development of the education sector and the country.

As rainfall and flooding remained highly unpredictable, NEU launched a week-long donation drive in a spirit of compassion and mutual support for people in affected localities, to help communities, localities and University students affected by Typhoon No. 3. Accordingly, staff and employees across the University participated by making monetary contributions equivalent to at least one day’s salary. The University also provided VND 1 million per student to students whose families had suffered severe damage from the storms and floods.

Immediately after the launch, NEU staff, lecturers, students and employees began making donations to support people affected by Typhoon No. 3.
