National Economics University Donates VND 200 Million to People and Students Affected by Typhoon No. 3 (Yagi)

On the afternoon of September 11, at the “Launch Ceremony for the Education Sector’s Support for People Affected by Typhoon No. 3,” organized by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) and the Vietnam Education Trade Union, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong, Vice President of National Economics University (NEU), presented VND 200 million on behalf of the University’s faculty and staff to support people in the northern provinces and students affected by Typhoon No. 3 (Yagi).

As a result of the typhoon and flooding, 10 teachers and school students have so far died or gone missing, and millions of school students remain unable to attend school.

Minister Nguyen Kim Son delivers remarks launching the appeal.

On behalf of MOET, Minister Nguyen Kim Son called on the entire education sector, officials, civil servants, public employees, staff, school and university students, and organizations and individuals within and outside the sector to join forces in providing material and moral support, encouragement, and connections to help people in typhoon- and flood-affected areas in general, and the education sector in northern provinces and cities in particular, overcome their difficulties. Any support at this time, whether notebooks, books, cash, or personal items, is deeply appreciated.

MOET also agreed that, given the limited resources available for relief, priority would be given to supporting people, first and foremost teachers and school students. These include teachers who have suffered losses and face difficulties with living conditions and transportation, and school students who cannot attend school without assistance. Departments of Education and Training and educational institutions are to raise awareness of support and contributions, including among school students. According to the Minister, even a donation of VND 1,000 or a pencil from students is valuable, as it embodies the spirit of education and sharing.

Deputy Minister Pham Ngoc Thuong receives the donation from National Economics University.

At the launch ceremony alone, MOET raised more than VND 6.6 billion. Donations will continue in the coming days through the Vietnam Education Trade Union.

Earlier, on September 10, the Vietnam Education Trade Union sent a document to provincial and municipal education trade unions; the Trade Union of the Ministry of Education and Training; units affiliated with the Vietnam Education Trade Union; trade unions at universities and schools nationwide; and organizations and businesses, concerning care, encouragement, and support for education in areas affected by typhoons and flooding in 2024.

Responding to the appeal from MOET and the Vietnam Education Trade Union, and in a spirit of mutual support and solidarity with people in affected localities, NEU launched a fundraising campaign to help affected people and NEU students recover from the damage caused by Typhoon No. 3. The University called on all faculty and staff and other employees to make monetary contributions equivalent to at least one day’s salary each. In addition, the University is providing VND 1 million per student to students whose families have suffered severe losses from the typhoon and flooding.
