The course, which originally used foreign textbooks and was taught in English, has also seen an increase in discussions and group work. “I incorporate many case studies with Vietnamese elements so that students can learn specialized knowledge while gaining a deeper understanding of the people, market, and context of Vietnam,” shared Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hoang Phuong Dung, a lecturer from the Faculty of Marketing.

This is one of the changes occurring as 24 students from various countries study for a semester at the Institute of Advanced Education Programs, High-Quality Programs, and POHE during the academic year 2026-2027. The diverse experiences and perspectives brought by the students enter the classroom; faculty members also adjust the content, language, and organization of lessons for a multicultural environment. The exchange occurs in both directions, with knowledge and experiences from many countries being introduced into the classroom, while stories about Vietnam’s land, people, and market become part of the international students’ exploration journey.

Currently, over 200,000 Vietnamese are studying abroad. Conversely, Vietnam receives about 22,000 foreign students annually; nearly 30,000 international students participate in exchange programs, partnerships, and short-term studies. The scale has increased in recent years, yet international students only account for about 1% of the total domestic student population. Vietnam has created an initial attraction, but the flow of students is still predominantly from Vietnam to the world.

According to Dr. Janet Ilieva, founder and CEO of Education Insight, UK, international students are increasingly seeking study destinations in eastern and southern countries. This trend opens a new direction: alongside sending students abroad, domestic universities can proactively build attractive academic programs and environments to attract students, experts, and international partners. To turn interest into a long-term choice, each educational institution must find its own answer: What is the value that makes students want to come, stay, and return to Vietnam?

The Attraction from the University’s Strengths

According to Prof. May TanMullins, Principal and Chief Executive Officer of the University of Reading Malaysia, it is challenging for any institution to simultaneously invest heavily in all areas. The key is to find a suitable direction, persistently pursue it, and establish a mark in the academic community as well as among international learners. For Vietnamese universities, strengths may stem from culture, heritage; issues related to agriculture, environment, and green development; or the realities of a rapidly transitioning economy. When integrated into the curriculum and practical experiences, these advantages can become reasons for learners to choose them.

At the Institute of Advanced Education, High Quality, and POHE, the foundation for attracting international students is built through English-language programs, international accreditation, and business connections. All courses in the advanced programs are taught in English; many programs managed by the Institute have been accredited according to ACBSP and FIBAA standards. According to Dr. Vu Van Ngoc, Director of the Institute of Advanced Education, High Quality, and POHE, whether studying finance, business, marketing, or management, students need to know how to leverage data and use technology to support decision-making.

Learning is connected to reality through internships and projects at domestic and international enterprises. For international students, the timetable and course list in English are announced early, allowing students to proactively choose courses and prepare plans before coming to Vietnam. According to Dr. Vu Van Ngoc, this may seem like a small detail, but it facilitates a smoother transition for learners entering a new environment.

English-language programs, international accreditation, or internship opportunities at enterprises are the first things students may notice when exploring a university. The long-term appeal lies in the unique value that the institution offers. With the Institute’s programs, international knowledge and standards are placed within the context of Vietnam’s market, culture, and life. This combination provides additional choices for international students and offers Vietnamese students the opportunity to study in an environment closer to the global context.

Within the framework of the State-level visit by the high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to New Zealand, the Vietnam-New Zealand Higher Education and Vocational Education Forum was held at Auckland University of Technology. Educational institutions, research institutes, and enterprises from both countries sought opportunities for collaboration in digital technology, biotechnology, high-tech agriculture, renewable energy, food technology, and green development. These are also areas where Vietnam needs more human resources, technology, and new training models.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director General of the International Cooperation Department, Ministry of Education and Training, educational diplomacy aims to attract knowledge, technology, talent, and international resources, while also promoting Vietnam’s academic image and capabilities to the world.

“Vietnam’s goal is to transition from a position of reception to co-creation of knowledge, from global participation to global contribution,” emphasized Ms. Thuy.

This transition needs to be recognized through specific changes within each institution: an upgraded program, a research outcome applied in practice, a new skill formed, or an international student or faculty member choosing Vietnam for study and work. As these movements become more frequent, the appeal of each educational institution will contribute to enhancing the nation’s capacity and position.

Source: Nhan Dan Newspaper

The presence of international students from various countries provides motivation for educational institutions to innovate, enhance quality, and build unique values, thereby engaging more deeply in the global education flow.
