O<\/em>n February 24, 2025, the Faculty of Law at National Economics University (NEU) organized an academic seminar on \u201cCommercial Mediation in Vietnam: Law and Implementation in Practice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

External guests attending the seminar were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Minh Hang, Secretary General of the Vietnam International Commercial Mediation Center (VICMC); MSc. Nguyen Thi Mai, Secretary General of the Vietnam Bar Federation; and MSc. Phan Trong Dat, Acting Director of the Vietnam Mediation Center (VMC – VIAC). Representing NEU were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Van Nam of the Faculty of Law, who moderated the seminar, along with faculty and staff from the Faculty of Law.<\/p>\n

This monthly talk show event is an initiative of the Executive Board of the Network of Vietnamese Training Institutions (VSLC), organized in cooperation with the network\u2019s member institutions. NEU became an active member of the VSLC network in 2018. This seminar is part of the 2024-2025 series of events hosted by the Faculty of Law at NEU.<\/p>\n

Before 2017, Vietnamese law had no formal mechanism specifically for commercial mediation. Disputes were primarily resolved through courts or arbitration. The establishment of centers such as the Vietnam Mediation Center (VMC) and the Vietnam International Commercial Mediation Center (VICMC) marked an important step in the development of this method of dispute resolution.<\/p>\n

Vietnam currently has 16 legally operating commercial mediation centers, along with several commercial arbitration centers that provide mediation services. The number of mediation cases received remains modest, primarily because businesses and stakeholders have limited awareness of the benefits of mediation, while a culture of resolving disputes in court continues to dominate the legal thinking of many parties. Some centers, such as VMC and VIAC, are stepping up mediator training while increasing communication about the benefits of mediation.<\/p>\n

Raising awareness of commercial mediation is not only an urgent immediate need but also a strategic step toward building a modern and effective legal environment. With support from state agencies, social organizations and businesses themselves, this method will become an important dispute resolution tool, helping to enhance Vietnam\u2019s competitiveness and international integration.<\/p>\n

It is hoped that the seminar will provide an opportunity to connect organizations to expand the teaching and application of ADR (out-of-court dispute resolution) nationwide.<\/p>\n
