First of all, attaining the title of professor—the highest academic rank conferred by the state—is an honor both for me personally and for my institution. In particular, under education law, opening and introducing any new academic program requires at least five doctoral degree holders in the same discipline, with an associate professor or professor leading the program. I am therefore very proud to meet the institution’s requirements and proud of my own achievement after many years of dedication to the profession.

What does the professorial title mean for your personal career and for the standing of the College of Business and NEU?

The College of Business is one of three colleges within NEU established as Vietnam’s higher education institutions move toward a university model comprising constituent colleges. This also reflects the global trend of gradually shifting from traditional, lecture-based universities to smart universities. The College of Business therefore needs to transform by reorganizing its disciplines around management functions, in line with the development trends of institutions worldwide. Attaining the title of professor gives me a stronger foundation for determining our direction and guiding the College toward the accreditation standards it seeks to meet. In particular, we aim to become one of the world’s 500 highly ranked institutions, while NEU’s overall strategy is to rank among Asia’s 150 best universities.

Which of your notable scientific works are you most passionate about?

I have been pursuing the idea of replacing value-added tax with a cost-added tax to reduce the time required and curb tax fraud and evasion. Drawing on research findings concerning the American-style direct taxation approach, which does not apply value-added tax, I propose taxing costs and profits at an equal rate of around 15% rather than levying value-added tax. Businesses and tax filers would then submit their own declarations transparently. Equal tax rates on costs and profits would eliminate the practice of businesses buying invoices to inflate costs and reduce taxable costs. Taxing costs would also encourage more businesses to use resources more efficiently. When overall production costs fall, Vietnamese goods will be more competitive and better priced in international markets.

As Rector of the College of Business, how do you balance your busy management responsibilities, scientific research and personal life?

Everyone in the teaching profession has two concurrent responsibilities: teaching and scientific research. In addition, lecturers in management positions undertake management duties at higher education institutions. The University has therefore introduced policies such as reducing required teaching hours to ensure that managers have time both for their professional work and for their management responsibilities. In particular, balancing these two responsibilities and performing them effectively requires appropriate management methods. Today, many software tools and technology platforms provide support. If we know how to make the most of them, managing our work becomes easier. I also plan everything, from management and teaching to my personal life. In the past, many people considered planning rigid. But without a clear plan, we are always reacting to situations and incidents. For me, the principle of planning is to finish today’s work today, but before wrapping up today’s work, we must plan for tomorrow.

Prof. Dr. Ta Van Loi at the national scientific conference “The Impact of Global Supply Chain Shifts on Vietnam’s Economy”

“The College of Business Must Rapidly Transition to a Smart College Model”

What is your leadership philosophy?

Since my appointment, the leadership philosophy I have consistently championed has been to create more employment opportunities for experts from both within and outside the College to come and work together. The second is co-creation: not only lecturers but also students can work together to produce scientific outputs, international journal articles and more. The third is that learning must be linked to experience. In the coming period, the College of Business will also propose that the University allow teaching models to be scaled up so that, in addition to field visits to businesses, all students can take part in role-playing and experience situations that mirror those in the real world.
