On the morning of July 12, 2024, National Economics University (NEU) hosted a seminar to share international experience in developing learning outcomes and academic programs that meet domestic and international quality assurance and accreditation standards.

An overview of the seminar

External delegates attending the seminar included Tran Bich Hue, Head of the Division of Education Quality Accreditation Management, Vietnam Education Quality Management Agency, Ministry of Education and Training (MOET). Experts in academic program design and development included Assoc. Prof. Dr. Pham Van Tuan, Education Quality Assurance Expert at the LYDINC Institute of Education and Engineering–Technology (an AUN-QA expert); and Johnson Ong Chee Bin, Founder and Owner of Educational Quality International, Singapore (an AUN-QA expert). Representing NEU were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong, Vice President; Dr. Le Anh Duc, Deputy Head in charge of the Department of Academic Affairs; representatives of the leadership of sociopolitical organizations; leaders of member schools, departments, faculties, institutes and centers; and University staff.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong, Vice President of NEU, delivers remarks

In his opening remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong, Vice President of NEU, warmly welcomed the quality assurance experts and managers who attended to share their experience in developing learning outcomes and academic programs at NEU that meet domestic and international quality assurance and accreditation standards.

Assoc. Prof. Bui Huy Nhuong shared that NEU is undergoing reform, with numerous short- and long-term goals. In particular, both the University’s recent development strategy and its future development direction have consistently emphasized quality assurance for academic programs.

One of NEU’s key strategies aims to develop additional academic programs and become a research-oriented, multidisciplinary university spanning multiple fields, ranking among Vietnam’s top five universities and Asia’s top 100 universities in economics, management and business administration according to international ranking standards. Alongside expanding the number of academic programs, however, NEU also requires that their quality be assured.

Over the years, NEU has consistently worked to build and strengthen quality assurance and quality accreditation through external assessment, internal peer review, institutional quality self-assessment, and academic program assessment against the criteria in MOET’s standards as well as international standards. Most recently, NEU welcomed an accreditation team from FIBAA, meeting 100% of the standards.

Accordingly, NEU has been offering 87 undergraduate academic programs across 42 Level IV fields of study (covering 11 broad fields and 16 groups of disciplines). Many of these fields are interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary. The programs comprise five advanced programs (taught in English), 16 high-quality programs, seven programs under the POHE Program (Professional-Oriented Higher Education), 20 English-taught academic programs, and 39 standard Vietnamese-taught academic programs.

Assoc. Prof. Bui Huy Nhuong, Vice President of NEU, also emphasized that developing new fields of study and academic programs; periodically reviewing, updating and improving academic programs; and accrediting academic programs play an extremely important role in enhancing the University’s educational quality. The workload involved in designing, developing and reviewing academic programs is therefore substantial, requiring systematic, structured implementation throughout the University, particularly within faculties and institutes, the academic units responsible for this work. Through the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Bui Huy Nhuong hoped to provide University faculty members with further international experience in academic program design and development, as well as program review, assessment and improvement.
