NEU Mathematics Olympiad Team Achieves Strong Results at the 31st National Mathematics Olympiad for University and School Students

The Mathematics Olympiad team from National Economics University (NEU) recently excelled at the 31st National Mathematics Olympiad for University Students, winning one gold medal, two silver medals and one bronze medal. These results reflect the team’s tireless efforts and serious approach to learning, as well as the dedicated support of their faculty advisors.

A challenging and prestigious intellectual competition, the National Mathematics Olympiad for University Students is organized by the Vietnam Mathematical Society in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Student Association, and Saigon University in Ho Chi Minh City. The competition attracted outstanding mathematical talents from universities across the country, with 649 contestants making 749 entries in two subjects, Algebra and Calculus. Contestants competed in two divisions: Division A and Division B (for non-specialist teams and teams participating for the first time).

The NEU team competed in Division A, a special division featuring problems ranging from difficult to very difficult that demand sharp thinking and advanced problem-solving skills. They competed alongside institutions specializing in mathematics and other strong universities, including Hanoi University of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, the University of Engineering and Technology under Vietnam National University, Hanoi, the University of Technology under Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi National University of Education, Ho Chi Minh City University of Education, Hanoi University of Science, and Ho Chi Minh City University of Science. In Division A, teams face highly abstract problems that require creative approaches to solving them. Students competing in Division A must demonstrate not only extensive knowledge but also perseverance and the ability to work under pressure.

The teams’ commendable achievements in Division A not only bring recognition to individual contestants but also help raise the standing of their universities, particularly NEU, whose Mathematics Olympiad team made an outstanding impression at this competition.

At the 31st Mathematics Olympiad, specifically in Division A, the NEU team won one gold medal (First Prize), two silver medals (Second Prize) and one bronze medal (Third Prize). Among the medalists, student Tong Manh Cuong excelled by winning First Prize in Algebra. This is a remarkable achievement, particularly as Algebra is no longer part of NEU’s formal curriculum. Nevertheless, Tong Manh Cuong demonstrated that passion and perseverance can overcome any limits, regardless of formal instruction at the University.

This clearly demonstrates the students’ daily efforts and dedication, supported by months of coaching and training from lecturers. The success in Division A also provides a powerful source of motivation, encouraging future generations of students to dedicate themselves, explore and reach new heights of knowledge. This achievement is not only a source of pride for the team but also helps affirm the quality of education and the development of mathematical thinking skills at NEU. These results also continue to uphold the University’s tradition of academic excellence at national Olympiads for university students.

Congratulations to NEU and its student Mathematics Olympiad team on their success.
