Journal of Economics and Development: 30 Years of Continuous Innovation and International Integration
The Journal of Economics and Development (JED) is a pioneer in innovation and international integration, applying the world’s most rigorous procedures, regulations, and standards for scholarly publishing. As a result, its Vietnamese-language edition has maintained its standing as one of the leading scholarly journals, consistently ranking among the five journals awarded the highest scores by the State Professorial Council in economics and business administration.

The Journal of Economics and Development is the scholarly publication of National Economics University (NEU). It was established on March 8, 1994, under Operating License No. 360/GPXB issued by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Information and Communications), with the mission of publishing original scientific research in economics and development.
JED Pioneers Innovation and International Integration
The Journal of Economics and Development was founded in the early years of Vietnam’s economic transition, building on NEU’s earlier scholarly publications, including Economic Studies in the 1960s-1970s and Scientific Bulletin in the 1980s-1990s.
Initially, the Journal of Economics and Development served the urgent teaching and scientific research needs of NEU’s faculty and staff. During this period, the Journal focused on presenting research in the disciplines covered by its teaching and training programs, while also providing information on scientific research and economic affairs in Vietnam and abroad. Its publication volume was modest, at six issues per year. Articles focused on fundamental and critical issues in Vietnam’s economy, such as economic management, local economies, and economics education, training, and research.
In the 2000s, the Journal began publishing monthly, and since 2010 it has published two issues per month. Its readership expanded beyond NEU’s teaching and research community to encompass Vietnam’s entire economics research community, including lecturers, researchers, PhD candidates, and master’s students nationwide. Another particularly important readership comprises leaders and managers at all levels of the Party, the State, the National Assembly, the Government, ministries, departments, agencies, corporations, and businesses, from the central to the local level.

As a result, its Vietnamese-language edition has maintained its standing as one of the leading scholarly journals, consistently ranking among the five journals awarded the highest scores by the State Professorial Council in economics and business administration.
The Journal’s English-language edition was launched in 2000 under the official name Journal of Economics and Development, with a quarterly publication schedule. In 2010, in response to the demands of international integration in scientific research, the Journal of Economics and Development was one of four scholarly journals selected and approved by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) to implement the project “Improving the Quality of English-Language Journal Editions to Meet International Standards.”
Achievements to Be Proud Of
With strong support from MOET and significant additional resources from NEU, the English-language edition—Journal of Economics and Development—became Vietnam’s first social science journal to be indexed in the Asean Citation Index in 2015. Building on this success, in 2019 the Journal entered a publishing partnership with Emerald Publishing (United Kingdom) to improve its quality and work toward meeting Scopus standards. Thanks to an appropriate investment strategy and effective support from its parent institution and the scholarly community in Vietnam and abroad, the Journal of Economics and Development was formally accepted for indexing in the Scopus database in December 2023 and in the Emerging Sources Citation Index in early 2024.

To meet increasingly stringent professional requirements, the Journal’s staff has also continued to grow in size and expertise. Initially, the Journal was a unit under the Department of Research Management, with only three staff members who combined research management duties with editing, printing, and publishing. Today, the Journal is an independent unit of the University, with seven highly qualified staff members performing specialized tasks within a rigorous peer-review and publishing process that approaches international standards. Its editorial board has also expanded: once composed solely of scholars from within the University, it now brings together many prominent figures in economics and business administration worldwide.
In recognition of its achievements, the Journal of Economics and Development has been recognized as an Outstanding Labor Collective for many consecutive years. The Journal’s Party cell has also been recognized as a clean and strong Party cell for many consecutive years. To date, the Journal has received certificates of merit from the Prime Minister, the Minister of Education and Training, and the Journalists Association, along with many other forms of recognition. These achievements would not have been possible without NEU’s vision and effective investment, important resources from MOET’s projects to upgrade scholarly journals, the contributions of generations of Journal staff over the past three decades, and, especially, the enthusiastic support of the economics research community in Vietnam and abroad.
A New Roadmap for JED
Building on its 30-year tradition of development and growth, the Journal of Economics and Development aims to continue improving its quality and expanding its reach, particularly its international presence, through its publishing partnership with the reputable publisher Emerald. At the same time, it remains committed to maintaining its leading position nationwide in economics and business administration research, with a view to substantially increasing regional diversity and attracting original scholarly work from researchers across the country.
For its English-language edition, JED aims to maintain its inclusion in the Scopus database and attract original work of high scholarly rigor from authors worldwide, thereby strengthening the presence and reputation of both the Journal and NEU within the international scholarly community.
In addition, the editorial team continually strives to improve its professional expertise, uphold professionalism and publishing ethics, comply with the most rigorous standards for scholarly publishing, and carry forward the proud tradition of previous generations, taking the Journal of Economics and Development to new heights.
Entering the 4.0 era, the Journal of Economics and Development continues its efforts to innovate, pioneer international integration, and apply the world’s most rigorous procedures, regulations, and standards for scholarly publishing, maintaining its standing and reputation as one of the leading scholarly journals.
