Hoang Minh Son, Deputy Minister of Education and Training, delivers remarks

Speaking at the ceremony, Hoang Minh Son, Deputy Minister of Education and Training, emphasized that this was an important event, marking a generational transition in leadership on NEU’s path of strong and sustainable development, as the country and the entire education sector enter a new stage of development with unprecedented opportunities, challenges and demands for comprehensive, profound reform.

The Deputy Minister noted that, over nearly 70 years of development, NEU has become one of the country’s leading centers for education, research and policy advice in economics and management, with a far-reaching influence on the development of the capital, localities and many key sectors and fields. It is the dream university of hundreds of thousands of school students each year and has also nurtured many talented leaders and managers, accomplished scientists and successful entrepreneurs.

NEU is a successful model of a fully autonomous university, with a significant, positive influence and spillover effects across Vietnam’s higher education system.

The Deputy Minister acknowledged and highly commended the contributions of successive generations of NEU leaders, particularly former President Prof. Dr. Pham Hong Chuong, who played a special role in guiding the University through many important junctures and laying a solid foundation for NEU to enter a new stage of development.

On behalf of the leadership of the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son presents the Decision recognizing the President of NEU and congratulatory flowers to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong

According to Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son, in the new context, higher education in general, and key universities such as NEU in particular, have an exceptionally important role.

NEU must be a center for developing high-quality human resources in economics, management, finance, technology and public policy, and a place that generates and disseminates new knowledge and leads innovation in economic thinking and development models. It must also be an important academic and policy partner to the State, businesses and society; pursue extensive international integration in academic and scientific activities; and serve as a prominent representative of Vietnamese universities in the region and globally.

To meet these requirements and expectations, NEU needs to continue its pioneering role in innovating curricula and teaching methods in conjunction with digital transformation and the application of artificial intelligence, promoting scientific research and innovation, business cooperation and internationalization, and expanding opportunities for development. This task rests not only with the entire University, but particularly with its leadership.

“A major university cannot do without leaders who have resolve, vision, dedication and organizational capabilities,” the Deputy Minister said.

Deputy Minister Hoang Minh Son emphasized that Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong, the newly appointed President of NEU, had developed his career at this very institution, received systematic training, gained extensive practical work experience and held many important management positions. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong has a deep understanding of NEU’s values and development aspirations, as well as a reform-minded, receptive and decisive approach.

The trust placed in Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong through his appointment as President is not only a testament to his individual capabilities, but also reflects the unity and great expectations of the University community and the confidence of the state management agency.

“In his new position, I expect Bui Huy Nhuong to build on the core values established over many terms of office; promote governance reform, modernize the university model, and advance autonomy alongside social responsibility. At the same time, he should develop professional, dedicated faculty and staff capable of integration; build a dynamic ecosystem for academic work and innovative entrepreneurship; and foster a spirit of open inquiry and citizenship in every student,” the Deputy Minister said.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong, newly appointed President of NEU, delivers remarks

In his acceptance remarks, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong, newly appointed President of NEU, affirmed that successive generations of NEU leaders have been exemplary models of intellect, resolve and dedication. Their achievements and lasting contributions constitute a valuable legacy that both motivates the University’s leadership and places a responsibility on them to continue writing glorious chapters in NEU’s history.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong observed that we are living in a changing world, where higher education has moved beyond national borders and is becoming an inseparable part of globalization, the rapidly unfolding scientific and technological revolution, digital transformation and the rise of artificial intelligence.

Vietnam is entering an era of vigorous advancement, with breakthrough Resolutions from the Party Central Committee setting new directions for socioeconomic development, education and training, science and technology, and the intellectual workforce. These changes are having a profound impact on the missions, organizational models and operating methods of higher education institutions.

“The new context presents both opportunities and challenges for NEU to continue affirming its pioneering role in Vietnam’s higher education system and achieve international standing. This requires us, on the one hand, to continue building on the core values forged over many generations and, on the other, to establish new strategic directions for development, with concrete and decisive action programs to drive stronger development for NEU in the new era.”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong also noted that becoming President of NEU was a tremendous honor as well as a challenging responsibility. Assoc. Prof. Bui Huy Nhuong affirmed that he would strive to contribute all his intellect, dedication and spirit of service to repay the confidence of MOET’s leadership, as well as the trust, affection and confidence placed in him by generations of leaders and the University’s faculty and staff.

“I believe that, with the determination, unity and shared commitment of the University’s faculty and staff, we will follow in the footsteps of previous generations to jointly build NEU into a research-oriented university, among the top five universities in Vietnam, striving to rank among the top 100 universities in Asia and achieve a high position in world rankings,” Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Huy Nhuong said.
