“In the coming period, National Economics University (NEU) will strengthen its close relationships with reputable, highly ranked international partners that have received quality accreditation in their home countries and are recognized by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) to continue ensuring and improving the quality of its international joint programs.”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hieu, Vice President of NEU, shared these remarks with a Dan tri reporter ahead of the new year.
Aiming to Rank Among the Region’s Leading Universities
Reporter: NEU is one of the country’s leading universities for economics education. Could you briefly introduce the University’s work on international rankings and accreditation?

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hieu, Vice President of NEU
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hieu: NEU is one of the country’s first universities to offer education in economics, management, and business administration. Over the past year, Times Higher Education placed the University in the 601–800 band in its Impact Rankings, based on the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The University currently has 19 academic programs that have received quality accreditation from ACBSP; another 15 academic programs are nearing completion of quality accreditation under FIBAA standards. The University has largely completed institutional quality accreditation under FIBAA standards and expects to receive certification in March 2024. In the coming period, the University will continue to expand quality accreditation of its academic programs under international standards.
Reporter: As the University prepares to become a university system in 2025, what is its strategic direction for educational cooperation to achieve its internationalization goal?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hieu: As the University works toward becoming a university system in 2025, its foremost priorities include consolidating and refining its university governance structure, improving educational quality to meet international standards, expanding scientific research and technology transfer activities, and continuing to ensure the well-being of faculty and staff. Developing an educational cooperation strategy to achieve internationalization is also one of these priorities.
NEU has three pillars: the College of Economics and Public Management, the College of Business, and the College of Management Technology. As NEU develops, it plans to establish a College of International Education and a College of Advanced Studies and Excellence. The University is currently a trusted partner of more than 100 universities and research centers in more than 30 countries worldwide, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Singapore, and many others. The University is stepping up efforts to attract international lecturers to teach and international students to study at the University; expand scientific research projects and international publications; update academic programs in line with international standards; and strengthen support for learners. NEU is implementing international cooperation activities comprehensively across all areas.
Distinctive Strengths: Partnerships With Reputable Universities, Incoming Student Quality, and Lecturers
Reporter: What types of international joint programs does the University currently offer through educational partnerships? Why should learners choose NEU’s international joint programs?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hieu: The University currently offers 20 joint programs at all three levels—undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral—with partners from countries with advanced education systems, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, France, and South Korea. The University’s joint education models include franchising, joint training (join training) delivered entirely (100%) in Vietnam using foreign academic programs, sandwich programs following 2+2 and 1+2 models, and transfer arrangements.
All joint programs at NEU involve partnerships with reputable educational institutions that are recognized and have received quality accreditation in their home countries. They offer fields of study in high demand among learners, including banking and finance, international business, business and event management, economics and finance, accounting and finance, business marketing, digital business, supply chain management, and actuarial science and finance. Today, learners and their families are informed consumers with access to extensive information, which they verify. Choosing NEU’s international joint programs is the right decision for learners. The University always has confidence in and values that choice by learners and their families.
Reporter: In your view, what distinguishes the joint academic programs at NEU?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hieu: Since its establishment, the University has consistently received the affection, trust, and high regard of Party and State leaders, learners, and their families for its educational quality, scientific research, and contributions to the community. With broad recognition from society and the public, the University has consistently enjoyed an advantage in being selected by leading organizations and universities worldwide as a reputable domestic educational institution for joint educational partnerships.

All of NEU’s international joint academic programs involve reputable, highly ranked partners that have received quality accreditation in their home countries and are recognized by MOET. Students in joint programs must meet admission and graduation requirements set by both MOET and the partner universities, including English proficiency standards, high school diplomas, tests and interviews assessing general knowledge, and foreign language certificates. Partners closely oversee every stage of the academic programs, particularly quality. The caliber of the partners and academic programs; the University’s learning environment; the friendliness, dedication, and expertise of its lecturers; and the quality of incoming students are distinctive features that make the University’s international joint programs attractive.
In the coming period, the University will continue to strengthen close cooperation with reputable, highly ranked international partners that have received quality accreditation in their home countries and are recognized by MOET, to continue ensuring and improving the quality of its joint programs.
Distinctive Offerings, From “Hardware” to “Soft” Extracurricular Activities
Reporter: The University consistently maintains a leading position among economics universities. In your view, what distinctive offerings make NEU attractive to learners?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thanh Hieu: NEU has consistently been recognized by the media and learners for its good facilities and extensive databases for education and scientific research. The University has always received attention and investment from the Party, the State, and international organizations such as WB and ADB… A modern electronic Library, funded by a USD 10 million investment from WB, has recently been inaugurated and put into operation, delivering substantial benefits to lecturers and learners. The University has also invested more than VND 10 billion in purchasing, developing, and updating databases, learning resources, and lecture materials for learners and educators both within and outside the University.
The University’s professors and associate professors account for the majority of all professors and associate professors in economics. More than 65% of its lecturers hold doctoral degrees, and its lecturers have received rigorous, reputable, high-quality training in countries with advanced education systems.
The University’s environment for learning, research, and teaching is consistently dynamic, modern, and engaging. Beyond the “hardware” factors mentioned above, in education the University always encourages and supports “soft” activities. It invests in extracurricular, cultural, and sports programs to attract student participation and help students become the best versions of themselves.
