On behalf of the University leadership, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Duc Tho, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chair of the University Council, congratulated generations of faculty and staff of the Faculty of Political Theory on the historic milestone of 40 years of development.

The Faculty of Political Theory’s development has been closely intertwined with the strong growth of NEU. Looking back on this journey through many ups and downs and changing times, we can see the Faculty’s important contributions to NEU’s successful development.

According to Assoc. Prof. Bui Duc Tho, on November 15, 2024, the Prime Minister signed a Decision converting NEU from a university into a comprehensive university, marking an important turning point in the University’s development. With a vision of becoming a multidisciplinary, multi-field university, NEU will focus on developing academic programs with strong interdisciplinary and specialized components, aiming to provide a high-quality workforce capable of responding flexibly to rapid changes in society. In this context, teaching political theory to students across all disciplines and fields plays an increasingly important role.

“This requires lecturers in the Faculty of Political Theory to continually improve their teaching methods, enhance their professional expertise, and be ready to apply scientific and technological advances to teaching and research. These efforts aim to meet the requirements for innovation in the education system in general and at NEU in particular,” emphasized Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Duc Tho.

Reviewing the Faculty’s 40 years of operation, Dr. Nguyen Thi Hoan, Dean of the Faculty of Political Theory, emphasized that these four decades had been a journey filled with proud milestones, thanks to generations of faculty and staff who had tirelessly sown the seeds of knowledge and shared humanistic values and noble ideals with successive cohorts of students. This journey also reflected the dedication to learning and service of tens of thousands of students, who had carried the Faculty’s pride to every region of the country, contributing their intellect and efforts to national construction and defense.

According to Dr. Nguyen Thi Hoan, in 2024, alongside NEU’s development and its transition from a university to a comprehensive university, the Faculty of Political Theory became a faculty under the College of Economics and Public Management.

Alongside fostering and enhancing professional expertise, the Faculty also works with the Party Committee and the Faculty’s Trade Union and Youth Union to strengthen lecturers’ political qualities through Party development activities and political study sessions launched by NEU.

“To date, virtually all lecturers in the Faculty are Party members. In their teaching, lecturers consistently seek to impart not only specialized knowledge to learners but also the guidelines, orientations, and policies of the Party and the State. The Faculty’s lecturers have also proactively applied new technologies and innovative teaching methods to improve the effectiveness and quality of education,” emphasized Dr. Nguyen Thi Hoan.

Lecturers of the Faculty of Political Theory receive a certificate of merit from the Minister of Education and Training and a certificate of commendation from the President.

Under Directive 25/CT-TƯ of the Party Central Committee Secretariat on reforming political education in universities and colleges, the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) introduced a policy to establish faculties of Marxism-Leninism at universities. Implementing this policy, in September 1984, the President of the University of Economics and Planning (now NEU) issued a decision establishing the Faculty of Marxism-Leninism (now the Faculty of Political Theory), with three Divisions: Basic Principles, Ho Chi Minh Thought, and the Revolutionary Line of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Over the past four decades, the Faculty of Political Theory has continually affirmed its pioneering role in theoretical teaching and research, helping shape the thinking and nurture the revolutionary ideals of generations of students—the country’s future stewards. From its challenging beginnings, the Faculty has grown substantially to become an important unit contributing to the sustainable development of NEU in particular and the nation’s education system in general.
