Mandatory phone number verification for social media accounts starting December 25, 2024

This requirement is set out in Decree 147/2024/NĐ-CP on the management, provision and use of Internet services and online information, which takes effect on December 25, 2024.

Under the Decree, within 90 days of December 25, 2024, cross-border and domestic social media platforms must verify users’ accounts using mobile phone numbers in Vietnam. Only when users confirm that they do not have a mobile phone number in Vietnam will their accounts be verified using personal identification numbers.

Users who use social media livestreaming features for commercial purposes must verify their accounts using personal identification numbers.

Platforms must ensure that only verified accounts can post information (including posts, comments and livestreams) and share information on social media.

For children under 16 who use social media, parents or guardians must register using their own information and must monitor and manage the content the children post and share on social media.
